Airline service from Bangalore to Puducherry

Despite officials from the government stating that Spice Jet would release their flight schedule from Bangalore to Puducherry in the next week (1st week of December 2012), the carrier is a little more hesitant to commit on these dates.

On Tuesday, Welfare Minister P. Rajavelu, along with several officials from the Tourism Department, met with the Regional Executive Director of the Airport Authority of India, Chennai, D. Devaraj and representatives from Air India, Spice Jet, Jet Airways, Jet Connect, Air Asia and Indigo Airlines. Following the meeting, an official from the Tourism Department told TheHindu that Spice Jet would be releasing their flight schedule between Puducherry and Bangalore in the coming week.

According to the official, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation approval had been obtained for the airlines around a year ago, and all that was left was for the work on the airport to be completed and the carrier to release their schedule before they would start operating flights.

A spokesperson for Spice Jet, however, seemed much less optimistic of the time frame. Speaking to TheHindu , the spokesperson said that they had not yet made a decision on Puducherry and they would most definitely not be releasing the schedule that early. They could not comment on whether a schedule would be released at a later date.

In the meanwhile, the work on the terminal building has almost been completed.

According to a Tourism Department official, all the building work and runway work had been completed. What was left was for the infrastructure work such as fitting of air-conditioners, wiring, CCTVs and scanning machines to be completed. It was possible to complete the work in a month’s time.

As a consequence of the meeting, gardening work and other works have started at the airport complex.

Speaking of the other airline companies who had attended the meeting, the official said that although there was an interest to come to Puducherry, there were several “internal problems” in the companies that were currently holding them back from committing. Since the runway could only allow ATR flights to operate, it was a bit of a problem for some companies who currently operated only bigger flights in the region.

A Two-day Seminar on the Indo-French Relations

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the de jure transfer of the French Establishments in India to the Union of India (August 1962), the Pavillon de France à Auroville and the Central University of Pondicherry (Centre for European Studies) are organizing a two-day seminar on the theme 'The Treaty of Cession (1962) - Fifty Years Later, Pondicherry and France.'

According to a release from Auroville today, the seminar will be held at the MMC (Town Hall) on November 16 and 17, 2012. Consul General of France in Puducherry Pierre Fournier will inaugurate the seminar.

The event is being organized with the financial support of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, and in partnership with the National Archives of India, INTACH (Puducherry Chapter).

As part of the seminar an exhibition on the Architecture of Puducherry prepared by INTACH(Puducherry chapter), an Odissi dance performance by Mr Rekha Tandon, Smiti and Shrishti blended with recitation of French and Indian Classics, and an exhibition organized on the de jure transfer of the French Establishments to the Union of India prepared by the National Archives of India (Puducherry Record Centre) will be there.

Meters compulsory for Pondicherry autos

To register complaints against autorickshaw drivers demanding more money than normal meter fare, people can dial 0413-2280170 or 0413-2280380

Transport Commissioner S. D Sundaresan has announced that all auto rickshaws (autos) running in Puducherry have to install meters immediately. Those vehicles found without meters after November 30 will be penalized. Hereafter autos should charge based on the meter reading. This is also effective from November 30, 2012.

The Hindu Young World Quiz in Puducherry

‘The Hindu Young World Quiz’, will take place on 6h November 2012, at Pondicherry Engineering College, Puducherry. S.B. Deepak Kumar, Collector, Puducherry, will be the chief guest and will give away prizes to the regional winners. The competition will begin at 10:15 am.

The regional winners will not only receive trophies and certificates from The Hindu but also cash prize of Rs.12,000, and gifts from the sponsors as well. UGC-NET centre in Pondicherry

Pondicherry University has now been recognised as a UGC-NET examination centre starting from December this year (2012). The centre code number is 77.

Applications for the exam should be sent to the registrar on or before November 22 and the exam will take place on December 30.

This is a really good news for people who are appearing for UGC NET exams in and around Pondicherry, earlier University of Madras, Chennai was the only nearest centre.
