Tourism projects planned at Arikamedu

The Tourism department plans to promote projects at Arikamedu site on the bank of Ariyankuppam river here in view of the historical and archeological importance of the site. Several excavations have been done on different occasions on the site to collect details of its importance. A meeting convened today by Welfare and Tourism Minister P Rajavelu to evolve a plan for tourism related projects decided to ensure that Arikamedu, also a trading post for Indo Roman commercial activities in second century BC, was developed to attract more number of historians, archaeologists and those interested in studying past history and its links with Rome. The site is believed to have once served as a site for export of precious stones, gems and beads. A release from Minister's office said the meeting discussed in detail the various projects for the site. The meeting also decided to place before the cabinet for approval reports of a consultancy firm to set up a family entertainment centre on the premises of the old government distillery, a five star resort hotel at Murungapakkam, a Special Economic Zone at Manapet and a few other projects. The Railway Department would be associated with the tourism department to make available space for display of tourism projects and sites to be seen here, the release said.
