The pipers are in town


Kekkalam, Pesalam, Life Kondadalam” and “Kelunga Kelunga Ketukite Irunga”, the two lines will be heard from every nook and corner of Puducherry in the coming days. BIG 92.7 FM and Suryan FM at 93.5 Mhz have already started transmission and will be launched officially by this weekend.

The pipers are going to canter in. FM can be our constant companion, and we can start our day with the radio, which is ideal for the early morning walk or workout. You can listen to radio, while sipping a cup of coffee or while waiting on the washing machine, and sing along with your favourite tunes. With radios at T-shops, autos, cars, shops and everyplace playing different songs at different times, the city will come alive. Puducherry may catch the FM fever.

For now, we tune into any of the nine FM stations in Chennai — Aha, Radio 1, BIG, Mirchi, Suryan, Radio City, Hello, All India Radio (AIR) Rainbow and AIR Gold.

AIR too joins the band

Talking of AIR, they too have been testing their FM service for the past few months. “We are presently relaying FM Rainbow channel from Chennai from 5.55 a.m. to 11 a.m. every day,” said Kalyani Ramachandran, the Station Director of Puducherry AIR.

Suryan FM has some 20 programmes during the day time and back to back music at night. They have recruited 15 Radio Jockeys from in and around Puducherry. “We are bringing in programmes similar to that of Chennai like ‘Kittu Mama’ and ‘Susie Mami’, which is being played by Gopal and Shyamala. It’s from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and is a kind of dialogue between a husband and wife. Blade Number One is another popular hour, which is a call in programme and the RJ, who does it here is Blade Raja,” said R. Amarnath of Suryan FM. Suryan is planning to put up hoardings all over town and also distribute about 1000 FM radios among T-shops and autorickshaws.

They have about 9 live phone-in programmes including “Anbudan Suryan FM” from 7 a.m. in which callers can call to wish their friends and relatives on occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. On Saturdays, they play the top 10 songs for an hour (from 8 p.m.) and on Sundays, they’ll discuss the top 10 movies for half an hour (from 8 p.m.) and then, have a chat with film stars.

This is BIG 92.7 FM’s 39th station and their RJs — Natarajan, Atholina, Desigan and Sathish — have been chosen from Puducherry.

The day with BIG starts with “Suprabhata” at 5 a.m., which will be followed “Inia Vazhtugal” by RJ Atholina from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. This will be followed by the breakfast show “BIG Vanakkam” by RJ Natarajan. Other shows on weekdays include “Chinna Chinna aasai” with RJ Atholina, “O Podu” with RJ Sathish and “Ennama Kannu” followed by “Ragasiyamaai”.

Sabita Kath, Director South, BIG 92.7 FM said, “The programming mix of the station has been put together after much research and understanding of local requirements. It is our aim to create content that is relevant, credible and has an aspirational value for the listeners.”
