General
  • Avoid giving money to beggars and gifts to unknown people, instead donate to the local associations who help for rehabilitation of these people.
  • Support the local traders for the economical development of the place.
  • Save the precious natural resources like energy, water and wild life.
  • Avoid unnecessary packing, the disposal of these materials can be a problem.
On Shopping
  • Most shops are closed on Sundays & Public holidays.
  • Bargain.
Local Etiquette for Visitors to Note
  • Shoes must be removed before entering Indian temples, mosques and homes.
On Eating Out
  • Fresh sea foods.
  • Beer & liquors are cheaper.
  • Normally 5%-10% on the bill or based on the service.
Getting Around
  • One of the best ways to get around is by walk.
  • Hire bicycles or two wheelers. [ proof of passport / driving license mandatory]
  • Auto rickshaw / tuk-tuk can be hired for Rs.20 to 35 [0 - 6 kms approx.]
  • Pondicherry - Auroville - Pondicherry by Auto / Tuk-Tuk costs approximately Rs.200 and by taxi Rs.350.
Clothing
  • Cotton Wears are best.
  • Short or very tight wears may attract unwanted attentions.
Health
  • Always drink mineral water.
  • Carrying mosquito repellent is advisable.
